P13 Design and control strategies for high-temperature cooling of Swedish office buildings using direct ground systems

In cold countries like Sweden, direct ground systems may provide a sustainable alternative for summer cooling of office buildings. These systems, when implemented with high-temperature distribution and terminal devices provide simple, robust and efficient solutions without mechanical cooling, which have the potential to deliver a COP of 25 or more. This project proposes to investigate the potential of various air- and water-based terminal devices for direct ground cooling of office buildings under Swedish conditions, using computer modelling as well as a state-of-the-art test facility at Chalmers. The final outcome of the project will be suitable design and control strategies for high-temperature cooling of office buildings in combination with a direct ground system. The HVAC industry is very interested in the project and therefore provide 60 % of the funding. The project is also aligned with EU’s 2020 policy regarding less emissions, energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy.
